Assistant Wrestling Coach, Social Circle High School (GA) · Former Head Coach, Hartland High School (MI), 1992–2021
Coach Cheney has spent more than three decades building championship wrestling programs. As head coach at Hartland High School in Michigan from 1992 to 2021 — 29 seasons — he compiled a career dual-meet record of 810-113-2, led the Eagles to the 2016 Michigan Division 1 team state championship (the first in program history) after five state runner-up finishes, and stacked up 19 conference titles, 25 district titles (22 straight), 22 regional titles (20 straight), and 19 state Final Four appearances. His wrestlers earned 130 All-State honors and 17 individual state championships, and 20 of his teams were named Academic All-State.
Since 2022 he has served as assistant wrestling coach at Social Circle High School in Georgia, where he has been part of staffs that won seven GHSA state team titles in four seasons — four straight Traditional championships (2023–2026) and three straight Duals championships (2024–2026). In 2024 the program's assistant staff was named the NWCA Georgia Assistant Coaching Staff of the Year.
A former Michigan state runner-up himself (135 lbs, 1990), Cheney has also coached football for 20 seasons across five stints, including the 2020 New Lothrop Division 7 state championship staff, and served as Hartland's summer school principal (2001–2004).
